Front Door

How much do you value your front door?

It's the place where people are welcomed into our homes and sometimes the first impression people get of us. It's also our contribution to the street we live, a chance to add something pleasant to the environment to be seen and so shared by all. Due to the many calls on my time, I admit that my garden has to be low maintenance but even so it's possible to make it welcoming.

The hydrangea by my door used to grow in my mother-in-law's garden so every time I see it I'm reminded of her. The first year it flowered blue, then pink for several subsequent years. What a surprise then that this year it is pink, blue and in some places purple. I haven't added anything to the soil so I wonder what's going on?

Hi Carol! No-one ever uses our front door as we live out in the country and people are used to coming into the farmyard. However, I do agree with you that it should create a favourable impression. I don't know what to think about that hydrangea - there must have been some changes to the Ph of the soil I should think - maybe extra rain or less rain or something. You never know do you. We live in a limestone area and yet have a flourishing rhododendron - when I asked a geologist about this he said it must be growing in an isolated pocket of peat.

we live in a flat so our front door is hidden away from most people! The front door at the bottom of the stairs is what people see, and the wonderful yellow flowering bush next to it. I like your hydrangeas, wonderful that they're changing colour, I never know how that happens either....

I'm no garden expert, but I do know that blue hydrangeas need acid soil. If they are flowering pink, you need to add blueing powder to the soil every 7 - 14 days.

The hydrangea is still expanding aso people have to squeeze past it to enter the house - how welcoming is that?
